Manager John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Again several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[two] The story was partly inspired by his ain experiences as a musician in a ring,[two] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of record labels during the 1990s, which formed the basis of Dan'southward character.[4] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Can a Song Salvage Your Life?, before he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to work the music around the story, instead of the other way around."[4] The script's way of featuring songs equally a natural element of the story was inspired past the 1954 Judy Garland musical flick A Star Is Born, and is also employed in Carney's earlier film In one case (2007).[5] Carney kickoff pitched the picture in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the film aslope Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose production company Exclusive Media financed the motion picture's US$8 million upkeep.[2]

Before casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop vocalist such equally Adele in the main role, also as a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at ane indicate attached to the project.[two] [6] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the role by training with a vocal coach and learning how to play a guitar.[7] Mark Ruffalo was Carney'south first choice for the role of Dan,[2] and agreed to star in the pic after Carney sent him the first draft of the screenplay.[6] Vocalizer Adam Levine was also the only person Carney considered casting as Dave, and won the office after talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue equally an audition;[8] he declined to exist paid for appearing in the film.[9] Although he had had minor acting parts on tv before, Begin Again marked his beginning part in a picture.[8] Carney approached James Corden to appear in the flick after admiring Corden'due south performance in the lead function in a Broadway production of One Human being, 2 Guvnors.[x]

Principal photography of the film began in New York Metropolis on July 2, 2012,[xi] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to film in Manhattan'south lesser known neighborhoods that would exist more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Hamlet, the East Village, Times Square, and Washington Foursquare Park.[13] [14] Rather than performing live during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In order to salvage coin on hiring a full crew and extras, some scenes—including ane in Times Square—were shot late at night with a handheld camera.[ii] The rooftop location well-nigh the Empire State Edifice is located at 28 Westward 36th St.[15] [xvi] [17] [xviii]

Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a serial of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'south performance and comportment while making Begin Once more. When asked about the disquisitional reaction to Sing Street by The Independent, Carney responded unprompted that "information technology'southward a pocket-sized personal movie with no Keira Knightleys in it. It's really rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly every bit a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since childhood, saying "I'll never make a moving-picture show with supermodels again." He besides criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, proverb, "I just think with Keira it was like asking her to do something that she could not practise."[20] Though he did not specifically name Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to make Sing Street came from his "experience of working, let's face it, with a model on my last motion picture".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their support for her afterwards Carney's comments.[22]

Carney later tweeted a public amends saying he felt like "a complete idiot" and saying that Knightley was "naught but professional person and dedicated" during the filming of the movie.[23]

In 2019, when asked nigh Carney's comments, Knightley accepted his apology and revealed that she was not shocked past his earlier comments equally they had not gotten forth during filming.[24] [25]
